The Sentence Was the Beginning: Inside the Threats Against the Metcalf Family

A guilty verdict closed the courtroom. It did not close the case for the family that lost a son. A Collin County jury convicted Karmelo Anthony of first-degree murder on June 9 and a judge sentenced him to 35 years for fatally stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco track meet in April 2025. The jury was given the option to sentence Anthony for as long as 99 years. For most outlets, the verdict was the ending. For the Metcalf family, it was the start of a whole new campaign of harassment and intimidation. TMZ reported that within hours of the guilty verdict, the family was flooded with hateful messages across social media and to personal phones, including one telling them Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, should have died instead. Some messages threatened to show up at family homes and taunted the family about Austin’s grave.
