SIXTEEN CONSECUTIVE MONTHS, NINETY-FOUR PERCENT, ZERO APOLOGY: REP. MARIA ELVIRA SALAZAR TOLD TRUMP HIS BORDER CRACKDOWN WENT ‘TOO FAR’ — THE ENFORCEMENT NUMBERS SAY SHE’S WRONG

OPINION / COMMENTARY

Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar dropped a campaign ad on September 17 that should make every Republican who actually wants to keep the House sit up. Not because the Miami-area Cuban-American is some secret Democrat. She isn’t. Because weeks out from the 2026 midterms, in a nearly three-quarters Hispanic, GOP-leaning district she has held since 2021, she decided to lecture President Trump on immigration in language that could have been written in a Democratic war room.

Here is what she said, verbatim:

“Mr. President, some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far. In July, 50% of the 50,000 people that were detained had no criminal record. Be careful what your advisers are telling you about immigration policy. The same Hispanics who helped you get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today. You can be for immigration what Lincoln was for slavery and Reagan was for communism. I’m not talking about giving them amnesty. I’m talking about giving them a dignified life in this promised land.”

That is not a clarification. That is a break.

Trump endorsed her re-election. Then she ran an ad telling the President his enforcement has “gone too far” and that Hispanics who backed him in 2024 now feel “betrayed.” Her Democratic opponent, former CBS News Miami anchor Eliott Rodriguez, who won his primary in August, did not miss it. “That video is mind-boggling,” he said. Then he went for the kill shot: “Let’s be clear: Maria Elvira Salazar is part of Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. She tries to paint herself as an advocate and a champion of immigrants, but she votes contrary to that.”

He is using her own ad against her. Of course he is.

Look at the record she actually built, not the ad she just cut. Salazar voted for the 2023 Secure the Border Act. She voted for the 2025 Laken Riley Act, which expanded enforcement and required detention of certain undocumented immigrants accused of crimes. She also backs the bipartisan DIGNITY Act and has said immigrants who have lived here for years, have no criminal record, and pay taxes should get renewable legal work status — “out of the shadows,” in her words. That is her lane. Fine. Argue it in committee. Do not drop a midterms ad that treats civil immigration arrests like a scandal while the other side is already calling her a Trump enforcer.

Because the operational facts are not complicated. As of September 2026, DHS and CBP say this administration has delivered 16 consecutive months of zero releases at the southern border. Border Patrol apprehensions are down 94 percent from Biden-era monthly averages — among the lowest levels in 30 years. That is not “too far.” That is the first serious restoration of control this country has seen in a generation.

Salazar’s July number tracks what CBS News reported: July 2026 was the first month of Trump’s second term in which people arrested with only civil immigration violations — no pending criminal charges or convictions — made up more than half of ICE arrests. Democrats have a script for that sentence. They say “no criminal record” and wait for Republicans to apologize for enforcing the law. Illegal presence is not a paperwork inconvenience. It is the predicate. If half the arrests in a given month are people who should not be here and have no other file on them, that is not mission creep. That is the mission.

National polling does not rescue the ad’s timing. A Fox News poll published mid-September put Trump’s overall approval at 39 percent, with 61 percent disapproving. On immigration, 56 percent disapproved of his handling — still his best-performing issue in that survey relative to the economy and foreign policy. A CBS News poll found 55 percent of adults nationally disapproved of his handling of immigration and 45 percent approved, with overall approval also at 39 percent. Underwater is underwater. It does not change the border math. It does not change that immigration remains the issue where he is least weak. And it does not explain why a Republican incumbent, endorsed by the President, decided September 17 was the moment to tell him his advisers are wrong and his voters feel betrayed.

Salazar is Cuban-American, born in Miami’s Little Havana, the daughter of Cuban exiles, a former television journalist whose office notes she has interviewed both Nicolás Maduro and Fidel Castro. She knows what a real police state looks like. She also knows what a wide-open border did to American cities, wages, schools, and hospitals. Framing interior enforcement as excess, while the southern border finally stopped functioning as a catch-and-release conveyor, is not moral courage. It is a midterm calculation dressed up as Lincoln and Reagan.

As of publication, her campaign had not responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. The White House had not responded to CBS News. Silence does not make the ad disappear. Rodriguez will play it. Every Democrat in a Hispanic district will play it. And every Republican who spent two years arguing that the Biden border was a national humiliation now has to explain why one of their own just told the President, on tape, that the first real enforcement in years went “too far.”

The border numbers are the rebuttal. Sixteen months of zero releases. Apprehensions down 94 percent. Levels not seen in decades. That is the record. The ad is the wobble. Midterms punish wobble.
