Zohran Mamdani had a choice to make this week, and he made it in under 280 characters. A man in New York City’s custody died Wednesday evening after a court appearance in Queens — Department of Correction staff performed CPR, EMS rushed him to a hospital, and he was pronounced dead. Mamdani posted his condolences to the family within hours. What he didn’t post, anywhere in that statement, was the name Ronell Marte.<\/p>\n

That’s because the man who died, Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, wasn’t in custody for jaywalking. He was there under indictment for murder, manslaughter, robbery and weapons possession, accused alongside co-defendant Axel Martinez of ambushing 26-year-old Ronell Marte — a man with autism — in the Bronx’s Starlight Park just before 3 a.m. on September 3, 2025. Marte was walking home after an overnight shift at an Amazon warehouse. Prosecutors say Martinez and Castillo held him up for his cellphone, Martinez shot him in the chest, and Castillo took the phone and ran. Marte died at the hospital. Martinez was arrested weeks later; Castillo stayed on the run for nearly two months before walking into the 43rd Precinct and surrendering. Both men were indicted by the Bronx District Attorney’s office. That is the record. Mamdani’s statement mentioned none of it.<\/p>\n

Here’s what he did say: “A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens. Department of Correction staff performed CPR until emergency medical services arrived to take him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. I extend my condolences to his family. In line with standard practice, the DOC and its oversight partners will investigate the circumstances of his death.” Clinical. Procedural. And conspicuously scrubbed of the fact that the “person” was an accused murderer, and the family with a far stronger claim to the mayor’s sympathy — the Marte family — got nothing.<\/p>\n

The backlash was immediate and it wasn’t just the usual online noise. Fox Business anchor David Asman put it bluntly: “I thought somewhere in the beginning of ‘An Idiot’s Guide to Being Mayor’ here’s a suggestion: ‘Display sympathy for the victims; Not the criminals.’” The Jewish advocacy group StopAntisemitism asked the question everybody was thinking: “Didn’t he murder a 26 year old special needs man?” Benny Polatseck, who worked digital for former Mayor Eric Adams, went straight at the double standard: “The guy Mamdani is mourning here was charged with robbing and murdering a 26 year old with special needs. Did you see any tweets from him mourning his helpless victim?” He didn’t. He hasn’t.<\/p>\n

And this isn’t a one-off. Six weeks earlier, Mamdani did the exact same thing. In August, he said he was “deeply saddened” by the Rikers Island death of Clarence Woodward, the man charged with hacking Bronx shop owner Jose Miranda to death with a meat cleaver in an unprovoked 2024 attack that left two kids without their father. Woodward had 27 prior arrests and had been out on parole for barely a month when Miranda was killed. Miranda’s family called Mamdani’s statement a slap in the face. Now it’s happened again, with a different victim’s family left to watch the mayor of their city extend public sympathy to the man accused of killing their loved one — while never once saying his name.<\/p>\n

This is what “progressive” criminal justice reform looks like when it’s practiced as a reflex instead of a policy. Mamdani has been busy on Rikers: ending 12-hour shifts for correctional officers, moving people of different ages into separate housing, pushing the city’s long-mandated Rikers closure, opening a 104-bed “therapeutic” unit at Bellevue, and tightening federal Nunez-monitor oversight of the jail. Reasonable people can debate whether any of that makes the system safer. What isn’t debatable is a mayor’s instinct, twice now, to reach for compassion toward the accused before he can spare a sentence for the dead. Ronell Marte worked nights at an Amazon warehouse and never made it home. His name should have been the first thing New Yorkers heard from City Hall this week. Instead it took reporters digging through court records to remind the mayor’s own constituents who the real victim was.<\/p>\n
