The man wasn’t supposed to be here at all.

Siddharth Jawahar, 38, founder of the Texas-based Swiftarc Capital LLC, was sentenced Tuesday by U.S. District Judge Zachary Bluestone to 11 years in federal prison and ordered to pay $31.35 million in restitution. Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri say Jawahar took in more than $35 million from investors between July 2016 and December 2023, actually invested about $10 million of it, and spent the rest running the oldest con in the book — using new investors’ money to pay off the old ones while he lived like a hedge fund billionaire on other people’s savings. Private jets. Luxury apartments in Austin and New York. High-end shopping. Exclusive club memberships. All of it paid for by 64 victims who thought they were building a retirement account.

One of those victims was Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, named in court by prosecutors according to local station KMOV-TV. Three NBA players — Gary Harris, Tim Hardaway Jr. and Mason Plumlee — got taken too. Jawahar didn’t even bother diversifying the money he pretended to invest: at one point close to 99% of client capital was parked in a single stock, Philip Morris Pakistan, which tanked and left him scrambling to hide the losses with fresh cash from new marks.

Judge Bluestone didn’t mince words. Jawahar, he said, “weaponized” the trust of his investors, leaving them with “massive” losses. That’s a federal judge’s word, not ours.

Here’s the part that should make every reader’s blood pressure spike. According to court documents, Jawahar is from India and had been living in the United States without legal status since 2005 — twenty-one years running a fraud shop, courting NFL stars and NBA players for investment cash, all while having no legal right to be in the country in the first place. And when the walls started closing in after his 2023 indictment, he didn’t get quiet and lawyer up like a man hoping for leniency. He went on offense. Prosecutors say he coached a victim to lie to the FBI, lied himself about his immigration status, and tried to get a relative to remotely wipe his iPhone to destroy evidence. This is not a man who made one bad decision. This is a man who spent two decades building a life on false premises and then tried to obstruct justice when the bill came due.

A Justice Department attorney, Colin McDonald of the DOJ’s National Fraud Enforcement Division, put it about as plainly as a federal prosecutor is allowed to on X, calling Jawahar an “illegal alien fraudster” and praising the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the win. He’s not wrong on either count.

This is the story underneath the story every time one of these financial-crime cases breaks: how does a person with no legal status in this country spend twenty-one years building a fund management company, marketing to professional athletes, moving tens of millions of dollars through the U.S. financial system — and nobody catches it until he’s already spent $25 million of other people’s money on penthouses? Jawahar pleaded guilty in January to three counts of wire fraud after a 2023 indictment. That means this fraud was operating in plain sight for years while the systems that are supposed to flag exactly this kind of thing — immigration status, financial licensing, basic due diligence — did nothing.

Jawahar is now looking at deportation on top of his prison sentence, which is the one piece of this story that should have happened years before he ever touched a single investor’s check. Instead, taxpayers get to fund his incarceration first.

Kelce and Taylor Swift will be fine — this was a rounding error against career earnings, not a crisis. The 63 other victims won’t have it so easy, and $31.35 million in court-ordered restitution from a man who just proved he’ll obstruct justice rather than come clean is worth exactly what these orders are usually worth: not much. The real question isn’t whether Jawahar goes to prison. It’s how many more Siddharth Jawahars are out there right now, running funds, courting athletes, and daring anyone to check their paperwork.

Sources:
Fox News Digital
CNN / AP

Siddharth Jawahar bilked 64 victims, including Travis Kelce and three NBA players, out of $35 million, then got caught coaching a witness and trying to wipe his phone.
