Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., put her name at the top of a letter to the Department of Justice and the FBI, signed by 59 of her House colleagues, demanding a “thorough, transparent, and comprehensive federal investigation into every hanging death of a Black individual across the United States.” The letter invoked the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, the 2022 law meant to let federal investigators step in on exactly this kind of case. It cited a report claiming more than 70 “modern-day lynchings” between 2000 and 2025, and said at least 10 Black Americans had already been found hanging in 2026 alone. The signature list ran sixty names deep: Pressley, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Al Green, Jasmine Crockett, Maxine Waters, Rashida Tlaib, LaMonica McIver, and dozens more sitting House Democrats.

Four days later, Rep. Shontel Brown, D-Ohio, put the claim in her own words on X: “In the last year, there’s been an alarming increase in Black Americans found dead hanging from trees. We know what that has meant throughout our history… That’s why I’ve joined [Pressley] to demand a federal investigation into possible lynchings.” Ocasio-Cortez had already gone further, calling the deaths “racial terror” and “widespread modern-day lynchings.”

Here is what the actual case files say, according to Fox News Digital’s review of the same incidents these sixty members are citing. A 21-year-old man found hanging from a tree in Cobb County, Georgia, in March: investigators concluded he was alone when he died, no foul play suspected. A 16-year-old found hanging in Charlotte, North Carolina, in May: ruled a suicide by local police. A 27-year-old in Miami-Dade County, Florida, in June: ruled a suicide by the sheriff’s department. At least three more of the cases cited in this wave of claims were also ruled suicides by local investigators. One remains open.

And then there is the one the letter’s authors lean on hardest: Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black mother of four, found hanging from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi. This is the case that actually was ruled a homicide — the Mississippi state medical examiner’s office made that determination, and Jackson police arrested a suspect. His name is Jarques Ratliff. He is 51 years old. He is Black. Police say he used a black cable cord to hang Fortune from the tree. He has pleaded not guilty and was denied bond, and Jackson’s police chief has said more arrests could follow. Whatever happened to Tasia Fortune, it was not the racial-terror scenario sixty members of Congress just asked the federal government to go find: white mobs stringing up Black Americans as a tool of intimidation. It was, on the government’s own account so far, an alleged domestic homicide with a Black man in custody.

That is the pattern hiding inside the pattern Pressley’s letter describes. Of the roughly ten cases driving this campaign, the overwhelming majority were closed by local medical examiners and police as suicides — tragic, and worth genuine attention as a mental health and public health story, but not lynchings. The single case that did turn out to be a homicide undercuts the racial narrative rather than confirming it. Nobody signing this letter has explained that discrepancy, and Brown’s office did not respond when Fox News Digital asked for comment.

The backlash arrived fast and from outside the usual conservative media lanes. Actor Dean Cain called Brown’s post “inventing racism. Purposely misleading and pernicious.” Critics online reached for the same comparison over and over: Jussie Smollett, the actor who staged a fake hate crime against himself in 2019 and was believed by half of Washington until the evidence said otherwise. The comparison isn’t a cheap shot. It’s the same mechanism — real anguish over a real category of crime, American racial violence, redirected into a story the facts don’t support, at a moment (an election year, with a report freshly published) when that story is politically useful.

None of this means concern about hate crimes is fake, or that families who buried the actual suicides in this batch don’t deserve compassion and better answers about why their children ended their own lives. It does mean sixty members of the U.S. House signed onto a federal demand built on a data set that, case by case, doesn’t hold up — and when the one exception arrived, it pointed the opposite direction from the story they were telling. That’s not a federal investigation. That’s a narrative in search of a crime scene, and it found the wrong one.

Sources:
Fox News: Rep.
