Forty trillion dollars. And here is the part they would rather you skip — we got here early. In May 2023 the Congressional Budget Office, the official scorekeeper, the people paid to know, projected that America would not touch $40 trillion until fiscal year 2028. We beat the professionals by two full fiscal years.

Now look at the pace. Thirty-eight trillion in October of last year. Thirty-nine trillion in March. Forty trillion this week. That is a trillion dollars every five months, twice in a row. No new pandemic. No mobilization. No crisis anybody bothered to declare. Just a routine, unremarkable Tuesday in August.

Michael A. Peterson, CEO of the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, laid out the trajectory: “On our current path, we’re going to be at $50 trillion in just six years. If you look backward, we were at $20 trillion less than 10 years ago.” Read that twice. We doubled the national debt in a decade, and we are on schedule to add another ten trillion before a child born today finishes first grade.

The interest is the whole argument

Here is the number that should end every budget debate in this town.

Interest payments on the federal debt will top $1 trillion this fiscal year. A record. Net interest is already north of $900 billion with weeks left on the clock. Those costs have more than tripled in five years, and interest now runs neck and neck with Medicare as the second-largest expense in the entire federal budget, behind only Social Security. That is Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, doing the arithmetic — and the arithmetic is not in dispute.

Which means the United States now spends more servicing yesterday’s debt than it spends defending the country. Fifty percent more on interest than on every children’s program combined. We are not buying anything with that money. We are renting the past.

Everybody built this

So who did it? Everybody. That is the honest answer, and this page is not in the business of the other kind.

The entitlement autopilot is a bipartisan monument, and for twenty years anyone who pointed at it got called a monster for his trouble. The COVID borrowing spree ran through Trump’s first term and the whole of Biden’s. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act both put real money on the tab. And Republicans — our team — raised the debt ceiling by $5 trillion last year, then went home and campaigned on fiscal responsibility. The Bipartisan Policy Center figures that shiny new $41.1 trillion ceiling gets hit somewhere between late winter and mid-summer of 2027. We bought ourselves about eighteen months of not having to talk about it. Mission accomplished.

The White House says it is “focused on slashing waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending while accelerating economic growth to get America’s debt-to-GDP ratio trending in the right direction,” per spokesman Kush Desai. Fine. Waste is real, fraud is real, and growth is the best friend a balance sheet ever had. But be an adult about it: Social Security and Medicare alone have already burned through more than $2 trillion this fiscal year, roughly 10,000 Baby Boomers retire every single day, and you cannot audit your way out of demographics. Anyone promising to close a $2 trillion annual deficit without touching the two programs driving it is selling you something.

The revenue side is not coming to the rescue either. Washington is collecting a record $5 trillion and spending about $7 trillion. The deficit for the first ten months of this fiscal year alone is $1.8 trillion — and part of that shortfall traces to the Supreme Court striking down some of the President’s tariffs. You do not get to skip that sentence just because you liked the tariffs.

The bond market stopped pretending

The 30-year Treasury yield touched 5.31 percent on August 17, its highest level since 2007. The 10-year sits near 4.7. Moody’s stripped America of its last perfect credit rating back in 2025. Treasury announced Wednesday it will step up buybacks of long-term bonds, which is what you do when the long end of the curve is telling you something you do not want to hear. Depending on whether you count debt held by the public or gross debt, America is running somewhere between 100 and 125 percent of GDP — territory we have not seen since the Second World War — with projections pointing to 120 percent by 2036. Per OECD analysis, our fiscal position is now the worst in the developed world. Not middling. Last.

And those yields are not a Wall Street abstraction. The 10-year sets your mortgage, your car note, and what it costs a small business to expand. Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, put it plainly: “$40 trillion of debt doesn’t exist solely on the government’s ledgers; it is felt throughout the economy and finds its way to the pocketbooks of people one way or another.”

Margaret Spellings, president and CEO of the Bipartisan Policy Center, added the line that ought to be nailed to the door of every committee room in the Capitol: “Our current fiscal trajectory is plainly unsustainable, and that’s the best-case scenario.”

Best case.

November

Voters already know. The Peterson Foundation’s U.S. Fiscal Confidence Index reads 39 against a neutral 100. Americans have felt the ground going soft under them for years. What they have never been offered is a governing class willing to say the true and unpopular thing out loud in an election year.

There is a midterm in November. Debt held by the public is $32.2 trillion of that $40 trillion — real money, owed to real creditors, with real interest coming due every single day.

Ask every candidate who wants your vote one question: which mandatory program will you reform, and how?

If they change the subject, you have your answer. And your kids have the bill.

— ARES

Sources

Fatima Hussein, Associated Press — The US national debt now stands at $40 trillion

CNN Business — National debt reaches grim $40 trillion milestone.
