Among Democrats, 58% hold a positive view of socialism and just 18% see it negatively. Capitalism gets 32% positive and 50% negative. That is a 26-point gap in socialism’s favor, inside the party that fully expects to run this country again.

College-educated Democrats are in deeper: 71% view socialism favorably, 16% unfavorably. Younger Democrats outpace older ones. White Democrats hold more favorable views of socialism than other racial groups in the party. About half of Democrats call the “democratic socialist” label a positive. And roughly half say their own party is not progressive enough yet.

Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) read the same numbers and said the quiet part out loud on X: “The Democratic Party is becoming the party of socialism. 58% view socialism positively. 50% view capitalism negatively. I’m a proud free market capitalist. This is lunacy.”

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) answered with an invitation: “We’re not socialists. And we don’t bite.”

Lunacy is the right word. And here is the part the establishment press will bury: the general public is still net-negative on socialism. Capitalism is better-liked overall. Most Americans still say a free-market system is a good thing for the economy. The country has not converted. One party’s base has.

But the same poll carries a warning for our side, and we should take it straight: most Americans call the current economic system unfair when it comes to the chance to get ahead. That grievance is real. Pretending it’s manufactured helps nobody. The socialists are already out there selling “equality” and “public services” as the cure. The right has to answer with results, not lectures.

Enter Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Beshear chairs the Democratic Governors Association, his term runs through December, and everyone in Washington knows what comes after that. On CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Aug. 16, interviewer Ed O’Keefe put the socialism numbers to him. Beshear ran the classic two-step.

“Now, I believe socialism is a failed experiment,” he said, “but I do believe that we need to get results for the American people, and I think when you look at Democratic governors, you see those results.”

Nice line for a general election. His own base just told the pollsters the opposite.

Give him this much: Beshear knows people are hurting, and he said so plainly. “They’re struggling because the cost of groceries is too high. The cost of gas is too high. It’s too hard to see a doctor, and when you do, the cost of that is too high as well.” He claims he has created more jobs than any governor in Kentucky history and that the average wage of a new job there this year tops $32 an hour — his numbers, not ours. He calls himself a pragmatist and a pro-business Democrat. He also touts vetoing “every anti-choice, every anti-LGBTQ plus, every anti-union bill” that hit his desk, says healthcare is “a basic human right,” and alleges the Republican “big ugly bill” could shutter 35 rural hospitals in Kentucky and fire 20,000 healthcare workers. That last one is his allegation, not an established fact.

All of that is the moderate mask. The tell is what he wants to do to the constitutional machinery.

Asked for his biggest, boldest idea, Beshear reached for a constitutional amendment: outlaw partisan redistricting, enshrine part of the Voting Rights Act in the Constitution, impose term limits on Congress and the Supreme Court, overturn Citizens United, and create direct election of the president and vice president.

O’Keefe caught it: “I didn’t realize you support abolishing the Electoral College.”

Beshear: “Yeah, I’ve said it a number of times.” His reason — Kentucky never sees a presidential candidate, and he wants nominees who have to earn votes beyond “seven states.”

Read that list again. Term-limit the Court. Kill the Electoral College. That is not pragmatism. That is radical surgery on the architecture that keeps America a republic of states instead of a handful of metros picking a president for the rest of us. And he is not alone — former Vice President Kamala Harris has also recently voiced wanting to change the Electoral College. Both are 2028 names. The party just set a calendar putting six states — South Carolina and Virginia among them — in position to vote before March 2028.

So here’s the play: denounce socialism to look electable. Rewrite the Constitution to keep a base that prefers socialism 58 to 32. The socialism line is theater. The structural overhaul is the program.

Beshear says he hasn’t decided on 2028 — “I haven’t made any final decision on that.” Fine. The blueprint is already on tape.

One last honest note from the same survey, because we don’t hide numbers around here: voters describe the Democratic Party as weak and not effective, and more than a third of Democrats say it about their own party. But those same voters describe the Republican Party as extreme — and also not effective. Both parties are on notice.

Americans feel the deck is stacked against them. That is not a talking point somebody cooked up last week; it is a lived fact for millions. The answer is not to tell them the pain is imaginary. It is to deliver growth, wages, and real opportunity under a free market that actually works for people who work — before the other side sells them something that has failed everywhere it has ever been tried.

Fetterman is right. The numbers are lunacy. And Beshear’s constitutional wish list shows exactly where that lunacy goes if it ever gets the keys.

Sources:

CBS News — CBS News poll on whether Democrats split over socialism, and how Americans see parties in today’s economy (Aug. 17, 2026)

CBS News — Transcript: Kentucky Gov.
