This week she woke up on ten. A Siena College poll released August 12 — conducted August 3 through 6 among 811 likely New York voters, margin of error plus or minus 4.6 points — shows the Democratic governor leading Republican Bruce Blakeman just 49 to 39. In June, among registered voters, that same matchup was a laugher at 52 to 32. Twenty points shrunk to ten in a single summer, and an incumbent governor still can’t crack 50 percent with Election Day inside three months. Siena’s own pollster, Steven Greenberg, slid the knife in gently, noting Hochul is “not crossing the magic 50% mark.” Translation: the frontrunner is running scared.

Look under the hood and it gets worse for Albany. Independents — the voters who actually decide statewide races — now break for Blakeman, the Nassau County executive carrying President Trump’s endorsement, 45 to 40. The downstate suburbs, Blakeman’s own backyard, have swung to him 49 to 41. Upstate is a dead heat. Among men and among white voters, dead heat. Hochul’s entire firewall is one city: she’s up 64 to 19 in New York City and virtually nowhere else. Strip out the five boroughs and this is a state trending red.

Then there’s the part Democrats will bury on page twelve. Siena asked voters, for the first time, to rate the Democratic Socialists of America — the movement that powered Zohran Mamdani’s 2025 New York City mayoral win. The verdict? Underwater, 30 percent favorable to 47 unfavorable. Eighty-two percent of Republicans and 57 percent of independents can’t stand them. This is the crowd Hochul has been happy to share a stage with when it suited her. New Yorkers just told her what they think of the company she keeps.

The character numbers are where this stops being a poll and starts being a diagnosis. Siena tested four traits — tough, honest, gets things done, and in touch with average New Yorkers — and Blakeman beats Hochul on every single one. Voters call Blakeman “tough” by 25 points; Hochul barely scrapes positive at plus 2. On honesty, Blakeman sits at plus 5 while the sitting governor is underwater at minus 2. “Gets things done”: Blakeman plus 8, Hochul plus 5. And “in touch with average New Yorkers”? Blakeman is minus 4 — Hochul a stunning minus 12. When voters decide the challenger they barely know is more honest and more in touch than the governor they’ve watched for four years, that’s a character problem no ad budget can paper over.

Blakeman isn’t playing coy about it. “All of the polls we have seen in the last two months have us virtually tied,” he said, dismissing this survey as “always off” and the race as “neck and neck.” He went further, branding Hochul “the worst governor in America” and pinning it on “high taxes, soaring electric bills, and increased crime.” Her campaign fired back the only way it knows how: a spokesman tying Blakeman to Trump, calling him “MAGA all the way” and hitting him for “campaigning with Trump himself.” Notice what’s missing from that rebuttal — a defense of her record. When your whole pitch is “my opponent likes the president,” you’ve already surrendered the affordability argument.

To be fair — and unlike the legacy press, we will be — the poll isn’t all sunshine for the GOP. On paper Hochul still leads the issues: affordable housing by 16 points (51 to 35), affordability by 7, plus narrow edges on energy, public safety, and handling undocumented immigrants. But here’s the tell: independents favor Blakeman by between 8 and 15 points on every one of those issues except housing. Hochul’s topline “advantage” is Democratic base loyalty, not persuasion. The persuadable middle has already made up its mind, and it isn’t signing up for four more years of this.

History should be keeping the governor’s mansion awake at night. In August 2022, Hochul led Lee Zeldin — now Trump’s EPA administrator — by 14 points and limped across the finish line up just 6. She’s starting this cycle weaker than that, at 10, in a state where 62 percent of voters say the country is on the wrong track. Run the math the way her own 2022 near-death experience ran it, and “safe Democratic incumbent” starts looking a lot like a coin flip.

Kathy Hochul can keep telling New Yorkers she’s cruising. The suburbs aren’t buying it, the independents aren’t buying it, and the socialists she’s courted are an anchor, not a life raft. Ten points and sinking — and Bruce Blakeman just has to keep doing the math.

Sources:

Siena College Research Institute — poll release (Aug. 12, 2026)

Fox News — Blakeman cuts into Hochul’s lead

Spectrum News — Siena poll: Hochul’s lead narrows

Yahoo News — Siena: Hochul has 10-point lead

A new Siena College poll cut Kathy Hochul’s lead over Republican Bruce Blakeman from 20 points to 10.
