On Thursday, July 30, thousands of migrants\u2014mainly young Moroccan men, plus some families\u2014breached the border into Ceuta, Spain\u2019s North African enclave that has been Spanish since 1580. They walked around the breakwaters at Tarajal beach and swam roughly three miles from Moroccan towns like Fnideq. Some even shouted \u201cViva Espa\u00f1a!\u201d as they poured in.<\/p>\n

The numbers are staggering and still disputed. Ceuta\u2019s regional president, Juan Jes\u00fas Vivas, said Friday that about 60,000 crossed in the past 24 hours. Spain\u2019s Interior Ministry estimated about 50,000 had come since Thursday, with roughly 37,500 already returned. For perspective, as of July 15 the ministry reported nearly 3,000 had entered Ceuta all year. The scenes recall the May 2021 surge when more than 8,000 crossed in two days. This was no ordinary flow. It was a mass breach.<\/p>\n

Deaths remain contested. Spain\u2019s government delegation in Ceuta told the Associated Press at least nine died Thursday. Other reports cited higher figures as the count rose. Local officials and rights groups described the human cost of a border that simply gave way.<\/p>\n

Rachid Sbihi, head of the association representing Spain\u2019s Civil Guard officers in Ceuta, told the AP the situation was \u201cabsolute chaos\u201d and that the border had \u201ctotally collapsed.\u201d That is not rhetoric. That is an officer on the ground describing the failure of a European nation to control its own territory.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s response has been a study in half-measures. The government is deploying the Armed Forces to help the Civil Guard \u201cmaintain security in the city of Ceuta.\u201d Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska visited Friday. S\u00e1nchez said he would intensify security forces, deploy a physical sea containment barrier to facilitate repatriation, expedite returns, and keep cooperating with Morocco against trafficking mafias. Yet Spain\u2019s Interior Ministry admitted it could not declare a national emergency because the law does not treat migration flows as a national-security risk\u2014even though Vivas had asked Madrid to do exactly that and send the army.<\/p>\n

The trigger, according to authorities in both Ceuta and Madrid, was a Spanish Supreme Court ruling earlier this month that barred summary deportation of migrants who arrive by sea (unlike those who cross by land or climb the fence). S\u00e1nchez claimed smugglers misinterpreted the ruling and that it \u201cspread like wildfire\u201d through human-trafficking networks. In other words, a judicial decision opened the door, the networks noticed, and the flood followed. Moroccan police used water cannons and fired warning shots into the air, according to rights groups, but the surge still happened.<\/p>\n

The ripple effects hit immediately. Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni threatened to suspend the Schengen open-border agreement with Spain \u201cto defend our borders and ensure the safety of our citizens\u201d\u2014even though Italy does not border Spain. When a sovereign nation has to threaten the end of free movement inside Europe because another country\u2019s border collapsed, the system is broken.<\/p>\n

President Trump did not mince words. At a Cabinet meeting Friday at Camp David he said: \u201cYou know, I saw Spain yesterday, and I watched the catastrophe that took place. It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people. And that same thing is going to happen to us if the Republicans don\u2019t get elected.\u201d He added that \u201cwe have the safest border in the world. If we\u2019re not in office, our country will be invaded at levels that made Spain look small time.\u201d He called it \u201ca talking point for the midterms.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Fox\u2019s Jacqui Heinrich he was even blunter: \u201cThat\u2019s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in\u201d and \u201cIf the Democrats get in, you will not live a very good life.\u201d He claimed Biden allowed \u201c25 million people into our country\u201d and said many of them were criminals. The White House blasted the Spanish government.<\/p>\n

Trump is right to connect the dots. What happened in Ceuta is not a distant European problem. It is a live demonstration of what open borders, activist courts, and weak political will produce: mass illegal entry, overwhelmed local forces, disputed death counts, and neighboring countries forced to consider closing their own doors. Spain\u2019s government could not even call it a national emergency under existing law. That is the soft underbelly of progressive migration policy\u2014rules that treat uncontrolled entry as a bureaucratic inconvenience rather than a sovereignty crisis.<\/p>\n

America under Republican leadership has the safest border in the world, according to the President. The alternative is the path Spain just walked. Voters in 2026 do not need more lectures about compassion. They need to look at Tarajal beach, listen to the Civil Guard officer who said the border \u201ctotally collapsed,\u201d and decide whether they want that movie playing in American cities. Trump has made the choice clear. The midterms will show whether the country is listening.<\/p>\n
