He called them motherfuckers. And he did it in public, on X, under his own name.

This is not some anonymous activist ranting in a comment section. This is a sitting member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives — District 9, Providence — first elected in November 2022. His own official bio says he works as a case manager assisting immigrants. In 2023 he introduced legislation, H5461, to let noncitizens vote in Rhode Island. That bill was tabled. In early 2025 he was arrested for DUI. And now he is openly threatening the men and women who enforce federal immigration law.

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Sanchez posted: “Fighting and dealing with ICE since last year has fucked me up in the head after trying to protect and defend hundreds and hundreds of our community members in Providence and across Rhode Island. Your day of reckoning will come motherfuckers. I swear to god.”

That is the voice of a state legislator. Not a street radical. A state legislator.

This is not the first time Sanchez has gone after ICE with that kind of language. In 2025, after an ICE operation on Alverson Street in Providence, he called the officers “Nazi Gestapo thugs” who “kidnapped another of our neighbors.” The man they arrested was Ivan Rene Mendoza Meza, 27, a Honduran national in the country illegally. According to ICE Boston spokesperson James Covington, Mendoza was a self-admitted MS-13 member who said he committed crimes for the gang. He faced fentanyl-trafficking charges in Rhode Island. ICE had lodged a detainer against him in August 2023. Rhode Island’s 6th District Court declined to honor that detainer and released him without notifying ICE. Sanchez’s response was to brand the officers Nazis and claim they had kidnapped a neighbor.

Now, after an ICE officer in Biddeford, Maine, fatally shot a 26-year-old man during an attempted traffic stop on July 13, 2026 — after the vehicle tried to flee — Sanchez has escalated from name-calling to an explicit promise of reckoning. Mainstream reporting has made clear the man who was shot was not the intended target and held a work permit. That fact does not change the substance of Sanchez’s threat. It does not change the pattern.

Rhode Island GOP Chair Allyn Meyers called the rhetoric “reckless and dangerous.” He noted that ICE agents “have been targeted for assassination and violence” and demanded Sanchez retract the statement. A DHS spokesperson was more direct: Sanchez “should be thanking our law enforcement for removing these dangerous criminals from his state — NOT vilifying law enforcement.” The same spokesperson pointed to a 1,300 percent increase in assaults against ICE officers.

This is the climate Sanchez is feeding. A state representative who tried to give noncitizens the right to vote, who works as a case manager for immigrants, who labeled ICE officers Nazis for removing a self-admitted MS-13 member facing fentanyl charges, is now promising those same officers a day of reckoning. He is not criticizing a policy. He is personalizing the fight and framing federal law enforcement as the enemy that must be confronted.

The pattern is consistent. When ICE removes a gang member who slipped through local release, Sanchez calls them Gestapo. When an officer uses force in a vehicle stop that turns deadly, Sanchez declares the agency’s day of reckoning is coming. He does not distinguish between the removal of a self-admitted MS-13 member facing fentanyl charges and the tragic outcome of a traffic stop involving someone who was not the target. He collapses both into the same narrative: ICE is the problem, and the community he “protects” is under siege.

That framing is not neutral. It is not advocacy. It is the language of escalation. And it is coming from a man who holds elected office in the Rhode Island House.

Sanchez has every right to oppose immigration enforcement. He has every right to introduce bills, to advocate for noncitizens, to criticize policy. What he does not have is a free pass to threaten federal officers with a “day of reckoning” while wrapping himself in the mantle of protecting “hundreds and hundreds” of community members. The record shows who some of those community members have been. One of them was a self-admitted MS-13 member released by a local court despite an ICE detainer. Another incident involved the use of deadly force during a fleeing vehicle stop. Sanchez treats both as proof that ICE is the aggressor.

Rhode Island voters sent this man to the State House. They should understand exactly what they got: a legislator who sees federal immigration officers as “motherfuckers” whose day is coming, who calls them Nazis for enforcing the law, and who treats the removal of a gang member facing fentanyl charges as a kidnapping. That is not representation. That is radicalization with a legislative letterhead.

The threats against ICE officers are already rising. The assaults are already up 1,300 percent. Elected officials who pour gasoline on that fire while claiming to speak for the community are not protecting anyone. They are endangering the very officers tasked with removing the people who actually prey on those communities. Sanchez’s post is not bravery. It is reckless theater from a man who has already shown where his priorities lie — and they do not lie with the rule of law.

Sources:

Fox News — Dem Rhode Island lawmaker threatens ICE: link

Fox News — Progressive Dem rep faces backlash for calling ICE ‘Nazi thugs’: link

Rep.
