Adam Fetcher is the walking definition of the credentialed Democrat class. Forty-two years old, Carleton College graduate, former deputy press secretary under Barack Obama, stints in media relations at the Department of the Interior and the Department of Homeland Security, followed by polished PR and marketing roles at Patagonia, Lyft, New Belgium Brewing, and Rivian. In 2016 he co-founded a consulting firm called Big Future Mission & Message. In July 2025, Democratic Mayor Jacob Frey parachuted him into Minneapolis City Hall as the city\u2019s first-ever chief communications officer at a salary of $186,495 a year. One year later, prosecutors say the same man was stealing from the desks and purses of the working people around him.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Fetcher was charged in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of financial transaction fraud. The charge stems from a June 11 incident. Prosecutors allege that while a female city employee was away from her desk for about 45 minutes, Fetcher took a debit card from her purse and used it to make a single $481 purchase at a Minneapolis tobacco shop. The victim returned, noticed her purse and wallet had been disturbed and the card was missing, contacted the shop, and the shop turned over surveillance video showing Fetcher arriving by car. A shop employee told police he was a regular customer. Fetcher allegedly returned days later and was confronted about the stolen card.<\/p>\n

Store manager Hamza Zamara told the Star Tribune that staff helped police identify Fetcher\u2014who frequently bought kratom\u2014as the man fraudulently using cards from various people. Sources indicate Fetcher is suspected of taking cash and cards from the desks and purses of multiple colleagues shortly after returning from a work-approved rehab program. Some of those purchases were for kratom, a mood-altering herbal supplement used for opioid withdrawal that can itself become addictive.<\/p>\n

In February 2026, Fetcher told coworkers he was seeking treatment for an unspecified substance abuse disorder and took a nine-week leave. He returned in mid-April. By around July 1 he was fired. City employees say they were never told their own workplace had been hit by alleged theft until they read about it in the Star Tribune on July 9. Many say they were never interviewed by investigators. The communications union filed a grievance Wednesday over the city\u2019s handling of the matter. City Operations Officer Margaret Anderson Kelliher allegedly told staff to \u201cput the details together\u201d because she could not share the details herself. She named Chris Kelly as the interim replacement.<\/p>\n

Fetcher has no criminal history beyond minor traffic infractions. He was charged by summons and has a court date of August 11.<\/p>\n

This is not a complicated story. An elite Obama-era operative with the right connections is handed a six-figure taxpayer-funded job by a Democratic mayor. After a taxpayer-funded leave for substance treatment, he returns to the office and is alleged to have begun stealing from the people who actually do the work. The city then keeps its own employees in the dark until the newspaper forces the issue into the open. The pattern is the point.<\/p>\n

Minneapolis and Minnesota, under Governor Tim Walz and Mayor Jacob Frey, already face intense scrutiny over public-fraud scandals. This episode lands squarely inside that larger failure. It is the predictable result of a political culture that treats government jobs as patronage for the connected class while treating the people who show up every day as afterthoughts. The same machine that lectures the rest of the country about equity and accountability cannot even tell its own workers that someone has allegedly been taking money out of their purses. When the facts finally surface, the response is a grievance, an interim appointment, and instructions to \u201cput the details together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fetcher\u2019s resume is the resume of the permanent class: White House, federal agencies, progressive brand names, consulting firm. None of it inoculated him against the alleged behavior that got him charged. None of it produced transparency from the city that hired him. The working people whose desks and purses were targeted got neither protection nor information until the press forced it. That is the real story. Not one man\u2019s personal failure, but the system that elevated him, paid him, protected the silence around the allegations, and still cannot manage basic honesty with its own employees. Democrat-run cities keep producing these outcomes because the incentives never change. Connections matter more than character. Image matters more than competence. And when the bill comes due, the people who actually work for a living are the last to be told.<\/p>\n
