This self-described Democratic Socialist isn’t hiding his agenda—he’s embracing it, pretending it’s some noble return to the Democratic Party’s roots while assuring the titans of finance that they’ve got nothing to worry about. It’s the same old socialist shell game: talk big about shared prosperity, soak the successful, and watch the city bleed out while claiming victory. Americans aren’t buying it.

In interviews with the New York Times and ABC “This Week” anchor Jonathan Karl, Mamdani made his vision crystal clear. He framed democratic socialism as a revival of the party’s past glory, invoking FDR and the New Deal. His exact words: “So much of what makes me proud to be a Democrat is looking at what our party used to stand for. You think about the Four Freedoms, you think FDR, you think the New Deal. Those are at the core of what our party’s identity is, and yet it feels like to experience it, you have to read about it. You can’t see it around you anymore.” This is classic leftist nostalgia, romanticizing government expansion as the path to freedom while ignoring how those policies ballooned bureaucracy and dependency.

But here’s where the mask slips. Even as he pushes higher taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers, Mamdani insists Wall Street, finance, and real estate leaders have nothing to fear. He welcomes private investment and cites American Express’s new headquarters at Two World Trade Center as proof that corporations are still betting on the Big Apple. “These business leaders, they’re not just making decisions on the basis of dollars and cents; they’re also making decisions on the basis of investing in the city and in what the city represents,” he said. And when pressed on sounding like a capitalist mayor, his response was telling: “I will always celebrate continued investment in this city. And I’ll also look to ensure that more and more New Yorkers can be a part of those benefits.”

What a load of empty rhetoric. You can’t confiscate wealth through punishing taxes and then act shocked when the golden geese start flying south. Mamdani has previously dismissed the threat of rich people leaving over taxes as “imagined.” Reality begs to differ. A Citizens Budget Commission analysis found New York’s share of the nation’s millionaires fell from 12.7% in 2010 to 8.7% in 2022—the steepest decline of any state—costing an estimated $10.7 billion in personal income tax revenue in 2022 alone. The report points straight to New York’s high taxes and declining competitiveness relative to Florida and Texas. This isn’t theory; it’s the scoreboard. Socialism doesn’t create; it redistributes until there’s nothing left to take.

Mamdani talks a good game about unity: “what brings us together is both a belief in the city and a commitment to its continued vitality.” But his actions tell a different story. He endorsed three NYC-area Democratic Socialist House candidates—Claire Valdez, Brad Lander, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—who won their primaries, with Lander and Avila Chevalier defeating incumbent Democrats. On ABC “This Week” with Jonathan Karl, he boldly declared that a democratic socialist “can get elected anywhere across this country for any position.” This isn’t moderation; it’s a full-throated push to radicalize the party from the top down.

As national Democrats debate the party’s direction ahead of the 2028 presidential election, Mamdani offers his prescription. “For too long, it has felt like our party, the Democratic Party, the only answer we have is to say that we are not the Republican Party. But we also have to have a vision of what comes after this administration.” Translation: double down on the same failed big-government experiments that hollowed out cities across the country. Forget innovation, personal responsibility, and free enterprise—the engines that built American greatness. Instead, chase the mirage of equality through coercion, where the state picks winners and losers, and everyday New Yorkers foot the bill while the very wealth that funds the city’s services heads for the exits.

This is the populist revolt in action. Working families in flyover country and even the outer boroughs see through the charade. They know democratic socialism isn’t compassionate—it’s corrosive. It promises Four Freedoms but delivers four walls of dependency: freedom from want replaced by endless welfare traps, freedom from fear swapped for fear of the taxman and the regulator. FDR’s New Deal had its flaws, but today’s version under Mamdani twists it into something unrecognizable—a weapon against the very producers who keep the lights on.

Mamdani’s assurances to business leaders ring hollow because history proves the pattern. Tax the rich, regulate the productive, and celebrate “investment” as the scraps that remain. New Yorkers deserve better than a mayor who celebrates socialist victories while pretending capitalism will happily fund its own demise. The millionaire flight isn’t imagined—it’s right there in the numbers. Florida and Texas aren’t just warmer; they’re freer, with lower taxes, less red tape, and actual opportunity.

The Democratic Party’s soul-searching for 2028 should start with this: we choose merit over mandates, growth over grievance, and liberty over levies. Mamdani can preach democratic socialism from City Hall, but the results speak louder. A declining millionaire share and billions in lost revenue aren’t signs of success—they’re warnings. New Yorkers and Americans everywhere should take note: socialism doesn’t evolve; it devours. The only real vision worth fighting for is the one that unleashes the American spirit, not smothers it under the weight of good intentions and higher taxes.

Let Mamdani keep romanticizing the New Deal while real results tell the tale. Patriots know the truth: you don’t build vitality by attacking the vital. You defend it with lower taxes, secure borders, strong families, and unapologetic American enterprise. That’s the path forward—not more socialism dressed up as nostalgia.

Sources:

Fox News — “Mamdani doubles down on democratic socialism while insisting Wall Street, business leaders can work with him”: https://www.foxnews.com/politics/mamdani-doubles-down-democratic-socialism-insisting-wall-street-business-leaders-work-him

ABC News — “Mamdani: Democratic socialist candidates can get elected anywhere across this country for any position”: https://abcnews.com/Politics/mamdani-democratic-socialist-candidates-elected-country-position/story?id=134286609

The Washington Times — “NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani says a democratic socialist can be elected U.S. president”: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2026/jun/28/nyc-mayor-zohran-mamdani-says-democratic-socialist-elected-us/

OPINION: New York’s socialist mayor tells Wall Street it has ‘nothing to fear’
