Mary Miller asked simple questions that any first-year medical student should be able to answer without hesitation. She got no straight answers. The hearing, titled “Training Activists, Not Physicians: The Impact of DEI on Medical Schools,” delivered exactly what the title promised.

Rep. Miller, Republican of Illinois, pressed Dr. Sam Hawgood, Chancellor of UC San Francisco, and Dr. Steven Dubinett, Dean of the UCLA School of Medicine. She started with a UCSF classroom guide called “Framework for Gender and Sex Concepts in Teaching.” That document tells instructors to stop using “pregnant women” and switch to “pregnant people.” Hawgood defended the change as part of a curriculum to help students facing a wide diversity of patients. He admitted the vast majority of pregnancies are in women and said he has absolutely no problem with the term pregnant women. Then Miller asked the direct question: Has a non-biological woman ever had a baby? Hawgood replied that a transgender person can. Miller shot back that this is not a biological woman and called it ridiculous.

The exchange exposed the game these institutions are playing. They want the flexibility to rewrite language when it suits the ideology, then retreat to “vast majority” language when cornered. They cannot bring themselves to say what biology has always said without adding disclaimers and escape clauses.

Miller then turned to UCLA. She cited a required course for ob-gyn students that advises them not to assume gender identity. She also pointed to a May 2026 class disclaimer stating that the use of “she” and “women” was not meant to exclude those who have a uterus but do not identify with these terms. Dubinett offered no direct yes-or-no answer. He said UCLA is treating transgender people in compliance with state and federal law and claimed the school teaches biology. His time expired before he could finish dodging the question.

This is not education. This is ideological compliance dressed up as medicine. When leaders of major medical schools cannot or will not affirm that only biological women get pregnant, or that having a uterus makes you a woman in the biological sense, they have stopped practicing medicine and started practicing politics. The hearing title said it plainly: they are training activists, not physicians.

After the hearing, Miller told Fox News Digital exactly what millions of Americans are thinking: “It shouldn’t take a medical degree to answer a basic biology question. This hearing exposed that our medical schools have become consumed by political ideology that they’re losing sight of reality. Patients just want doctors grounded in common sense. Medical schools that abandon scientific truth should lose their accreditation.”

She is right. Patients do not go to the doctor looking for linguistic gymnastics. They want someone who knows the difference between a man and a woman, who understands that pregnancy happens in biological females, and who will not inject political word games into the examination room. When medical schools force future doctors to treat basic biology as optional or offensive, they are not preparing healers. They are preparing ideologues who will prioritize feelings over facts.

The U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee, under Chairman Rep. Tim Walberg, is doing its job by dragging this into the light. Other witnesses from the National Medical Association and the University of Illinois College of Medicine were on the panel, but it was the UC leaders who showed the clearest symptoms of the disease. They could not give a direct answer because the ideology they have embraced does not allow one. Once you accept that language must be policed to protect feelings, you eventually lose the ability to speak plainly about the human body.

This is the predictable result of years of DEI capture in higher education. Medical schools that once existed to train competent doctors now spend time and resources rewriting terminology guides and drafting disclaimers so no one feels excluded by biological reality. The cost is not abstract. Future physicians are being taught that clarity is dangerous and that science must bend to ideology. That is malpractice before they ever see a patient.

Americans have a right to expect better from institutions that train the people who will one day hold their lives in their hands. If these schools cannot answer basic questions about biology without evasion or ideological lectures, they have forfeited any claim to public trust or accreditation. Rep. Miller did not ask trick questions. She asked what used to be obvious. The fact that top administrators at UCSF and UCLA could not give clear answers is the indictment. The rest of us should stop pretending this is normal or harmless.

Medicine exists to treat real bodies, not to validate political theories. When medical schools forget that distinction, they stop being medical schools. The hearing yesterday proved it beyond any doubt.

Sources:

Fox News

Washington Examiner

House Committee on Education & the Workforce

Just The News

At a July 14, 2026 House Education and Workforce Committee hearing on DEI in medical schools, UC leaders couldn’t give Rep.
