By signing an executive order and issuing proclamations under the Antiquities Act, he reduced Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments in Utah by roughly 90 percent each. This is not a minor tweak. It is a direct reversal of the abusive expansion of presidential power that had locked away more than 3.2 million acres — an area nearly the size of Connecticut — and returned those lands to the people who actually live and work in the American West.

The scale of the original designations was absurd from the start. Grand Staircase-Escalante, created by President Bill Clinton in 1996, is being cut from about 1.87 million acres to roughly 182,000 acres. Bears Ears, created by President Barack Obama in 2016, drops from about 1.36 million acres to around 121,000 acres. Both monuments now sit at a combined footprint of roughly 300,000 acres. That is still substantial protection where it is genuinely needed. It is no longer a de facto wilderness empire that prevents any productive use across millions of acres of federal public land.

The 1906 Antiquities Act was never written to hand presidents a blank check for creating massive restricted zones. It was meant for the smallest area necessary to protect specific antiquities. President Trump said exactly that during his first term when he tried to shrink these monuments. President Joe Biden reversed those reductions in 2021. Now Trump has finished what he started. At the White House signing event he put it plainly: “They took the land from the people, quite honestly. We’re giving it back.”

Utah Governor Spencer Cox attended and backed the move without hesitation. He called it “a big day for Utah” and correctly noted that designations under the Antiquities Act “are supposed to be the smallest area as possible to protect the antiquities.” He also pointed out that the original monuments were bigger than the state of Delaware. For too long, states like Utah have watched Washington treat their lands as colonial territory — off-limits to mining, drilling, and construction while activists in distant cities decide what counts as “protection.”

These lands contain real resources that matter to American strength. Grand Staircase-Escalante holds coal. Bears Ears holds uranium. Monument status has barred development on the surrounding acreage. Proponents of Trump’s downsizing have long argued that those boundaries stretched too far and hindered mining for critical minerals. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum pushed to review the boundaries precisely to expand U.S. energy production. That is the core issue. This is not about destroying the West. It is about refusing to let radical environmental rules and bureaucratic empire-building keep strategic American resources in the ground while we remain dependent on foreign suppliers.

The opposition was immediate and predictable. Davina Smith-Idjesa, a Navajo Nation citizen and co-chair of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition, called the decision “heartbreaking” and alleged that officials sidestepped their legal duty to consult tribal nations. She stated that from a Navajo perspective, Bears Ears “is not simply a piece of federal public land. This is a living cultural site that holds our histories, our ceremonies, our traditional foods and medicines and our ancestors’ footprints.” Bears Ears was the first monument created at the request of tribal nations and honored five tribes: Navajo, Hopi, Zuni, Ute Mountain Ute, and Uintah-Ouray Ute. Cultural heritage deserves consideration. It does not grant any group veto power over national resource policy or turn millions of acres of federal public land into an exclusive preserve. The same federal government that manages these lands for all citizens has every right — and responsibility — to right-size designations that clearly exceeded the Act’s original intent.

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance has already announced plans to challenge the order in federal court. That is their pattern. Sen. Mike Lee of Utah previously proposed selling more than 3,200 square miles of federal land in the state, though the provision was removed from a GOP tax-and-spending bill. Last year the Supreme Court rejected a Utah lawsuit seeking greater state control over federal lands within its borders. Western states have been fighting this same battle for years. Trump’s action does not end the fight, but it uses the very authority of the Antiquities Act to restore balance instead of letting the expansionists keep winning by default.

This is what putting America First on land policy actually looks like. Previous administrations used the Antiquities Act as a tool to lock up resources, kill jobs in rural communities, and hand permanent control to federal agencies and aligned activist groups. Trump is using the same authority to shrink those designations back to reasonable size, open the door for responsible development of coal and uranium, and remind everyone that these are public lands belonging to the entire country — not private fiefdoms for any faction. The people of Utah have waited long enough for Washington to stop treating their state as a museum exhibit.

The lawsuits will come. The media outrage is already here. None of it changes the basic truth. The original monuments were massive land grabs that violated the spirit and letter of the law that created them. Trump has corrected that abuse. He has given the land back to productive use and to the citizens whose future depends on reasonable access to American resources. That is leadership. That is sovereignty. And that is exactly what the country voted for.

Sources:

Fox News — Trump signs order shrinking Bears Ears, Grand Staircase monuments

NBC News / AP — Trump reduces size of 2 national monuments in Utah

The Washington Post — Trump again dramatically cuts size of two national monuments in Utah

KUER — Trump slashes Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante by 90%

The Salt Lake Tribune — President Trump shrinks Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante

OPINION / COMMENTARY.
