Presented as a tourism guide, it highlights 30 immigrant communities across the five boroughs, including Koreatown, Little Pakistan, Little Yemen, three Chinatowns, Little Bangladesh, Little Poland, and more than 20 others. According to Ynetnews reporting, the added enclaves include “Little Palestine,” “Little Egypt,” and “Little Senegal.”

The map omits Little Italy in Manhattan, Jewish neighborhoods including Hasidic Borough Park and Syrian Flatbush, and Irish neighborhoods including Woodlawn and Breezy Point.

This map originated in 2023 under former Mayor Eric Adams and was created by the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Mamdani, who took office in 2026, inherited it and added neighborhoods. At a Friday press conference, he stated: “This map was initially created by the prior administration in 2023, and when we inherited it, we added a few additional neighborhoods. It’s clearly not an exhaustive list of the more than 200 ethnic communities that call our city home, and we’re going to be making additional changes in the future to reflect that and that includes Little Italy.”

He promised to add Little Italy. Yet the version now being promoted under his leadership for a major international event left out these historic communities while making space for others.

The Italian American Civil Rights League posted on X: “Zohran Mamdani wants to ERASE Italian Americans. First, he denied our permit for Unity Day 2026. Now, he is excluding Little Italy as a recognized location all together on the map.” Its president Mike Crispi said: “Mamdani’s City Hall can find room for every fashionable progressive constituency, but somehow it cannot find Little Italy.”

Republican NYC Council Member Vickie Paladino mocked the map on X, joking she would rename her district “Little America,” writing: “Here we welcome refugees from the rest of the city who want to live amongst a culture reminiscent of the nation they once knew as The United States.”

Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella, an Italian American, noted the absence of Little Italy, of Jewish Americans in Brooklyn, and of Sri Lankans on Staten Island, saying: “Ignorance is not a good ingredient for highlighting the sacrifices of so many who built this City and gave so much.”

Moshe Davis, former director of the office to combat antisemitism under Adams, advised Mamdani to visit the omitted Jewish enclaves including Borough Park and Syrian Flatbush. Former Mayor Eric Adams’ spokesperson said they do not accept blame for the oversight.

This comes as Rep. Nicole Malliotakis criticized Mamdani for skipping the Israel Day Parade.

The Library of Congress records that more than 4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between the 1880s and 1924, with roughly one-third settling in New York City. These immigrants and their descendants helped build the city’s infrastructure, economy, and neighborhoods. Their historic enclave deserved recognition on any official map of immigrant communities.

Instead, the choices reveal a clear double standard. Space was found for “Little Palestine” and other additions, but not for Little Italy or the longstanding Jewish and Irish communities that shaped New York for generations. Mamdani’s promise to add Little Italy arrived only after public criticism. That timing exposes the initial decision as either careless or calculated.

This is not how a city honors its builders. When an official tourism map tied to the World Cup presents a curated list that elevates some groups and erases others, it sends a message about whose history matters. The Italian American Civil Rights League called it erasure, linking it to the denial of their Unity Day permit. Council Member Paladino highlighted the absurdity with her “Little America” jab. Borough President Fossella tied it to ignorance of the sacrifices that built the city.

The pattern fits a progressive approach that treats cultural recognition as a political tool. Groups aligned with current ideological priorities receive celebration. Foundational communities whose contributions are inconvenient to the preferred narrative get sidelined until backlash forces a fix. This fragments New York’s story into competing identities rather than a shared inheritance of those who turned the city into a global capital.

New York has always been a city of immigrants, but its strength came from waves of newcomers who worked and contributed to a common civic culture. The Italians who arrived in such large numbers did not merely occupy space. They built. Jewish and Irish communities did the same. An official map that downplays their role while spotlighting newer enclaves distorts that record.

Mamdani can add Little Italy now. He should. But the original omission, combined with the inclusion of “Little Palestine” per reporting and the skipping of the Israel Day Parade, points to priorities that favor fashionable constituencies over historical completeness. Adams’ team refuses to take blame, and the current administration’s product speaks for itself.

Heritage is not a favor granted by City Hall based on political winds. New Yorkers built this city across generations. An official map should reflect that full truth without ideological filtering. The backlash to this map shows that many still care about getting the story right. City leadership would do well to listen before the next selective project appears.

Sources:

Fox News — Mamdani defends controversial NYC map

ABC7 New York (WABC) — Mamdani says he will change map after backlash

Ynetnews — ‘Little Palestine’ in, ‘Little Italy’ out

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s city “Immigrant Enclaves” map celebrated dozens of communities — reportedly including “Little Palestine” — while erasing Little Italy and historic Jewish and Irish neighborhoods.
