With more than 120,000 members, the Democratic Socialists of America saw its National Political Committee adopt a new platform titled “Workers Deserve More!” through its internal resolution process. The document will receive its full public rollout at the group’s national organizing conference in Chicago at the end of July. Its core demand is not incremental reform. It is the systematic dismantling of the constitutional architecture that has defined the American republic for nearly two and a half centuries.

The platform explicitly calls for abolishing the U.S. Senate. It further demands replacing the President and the Supreme Court with “an executive and judiciary chosen by and subordinate to Congress.” This “real democracy” amendment passed by the narrowest of margins. The same body voted 16 to 8 to abolish “the carceral forces of the capitalist state,” the DSA’s term for police and prisons. It also calls for drafting an entirely new constitution to establish a “democratic socialist republic” built on proportional representation in a single federal legislature. In plain language, the organization that already shapes a significant faction of the Democratic Party has declared the existing Constitution an obstacle to its vision and has begun writing the blueprint to replace it.

DSA leaders did not mince words during the debate. NPC member Cliff Connolly stated that “we’re never going to have democracy or socialism in the United States as long as the president and the Supreme Court exist in their current form,” pointing to the Supreme Court blocking elements of the Biden administration’s student-debt agenda as proof. NPC co-chair Ashik Siddique described abolishing the Senate as “pretty radical” while claiming more people are coming to see it as “very reasonable.” Another participant called the elimination of police and prisons a “basic socialist demand.” These are not offhand remarks from the fringe. They are statements from the governing body of the largest socialist organization in the country, now codified in its national platform.

This is not an isolated set of proposals. The new platform layers radical new demands on top of the DSA’s existing positions, which already include a 32-hour work week with no reduction in pay, Medicare for All, the cancellation of all student loan debt, the elimination of cash bail, universal rent control, an immediate end to all deportations, free migration between countries, and voting rights for noncitizens and people with criminal convictions. The updated document adds amnesty for all illegal immigrants, the abolition of the Electoral College, full public financing of campaigns, public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries, the defunding of the military (referred to as the “Department of War”), the closure of overseas bases, and the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran, Cuba, and Russia. It further endorses naming Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state and ranked-choice voting, both passed unanimously. As City Journal noted, the platform’s call to end “restrictions on marriage” would presumably entail the legalization of polygamy.

The through-line is unmistakable. Every major structural feature of the American system that disperses power, protects minority rights within the federal structure, maintains an independent judiciary, or preserves a strong national defense is targeted for elimination or subordination. The Senate’s equal representation of states, the Electoral College’s role in forcing candidates to build broad geographic coalitions, and the separation of powers that prevents any single branch from dominating the others are all treated as barriers to “real democracy.” In their place, the DSA envisions a centralized system in which Congress holds dominant authority over the executive and judiciary, private enterprise is brought under public control, and traditional institutions are reengineered to serve socialist outcomes.

This agenda is not confined to theoretical debate. The DSA has already translated its influence into electoral gains inside the Democratic Party. It has endorsed Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib. Its most prominent member, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, an immigrant from Uganda, was sworn into office on January 1, 2026, by Sen. Bernie Sanders after defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the 2025 Democratic primary. DSA-endorsed candidates Melat Kiros, age 29, in Colorado, and Darializa Avila-Chevalier in New York have recently defeated sitting Democratic members of Congress in primaries. The organization is not waiting for permission from the broader electorate. It is capturing institutions from within, primarying more moderate Democrats and installing committed activists in positions of power.

The adoption of this platform through the NPC rather than a full convention ratification further illustrates the strategy: committed cadres driving the direction even when broader ratification might prove more difficult. The result is a public document that removes any remaining ambiguity about the endgame. The DSA is not proposing to work within the American constitutional order. It is proposing to replace that order with a single-legislature socialist republic in which the structural protections against concentrated power have been deliberately stripped away.

Americans who still believe in the constitutional republic as founded now have a clear choice. They can continue treating these positions as marginal rhetoric from an irrelevant fringe, or they can recognize that the largest socialist organization in the country, already embedded in major Democratic strongholds and successfully primarying sitting members of Congress, has put its revolutionary objectives in writing. The DSA has told the country exactly what it intends to do with the Senate, the courts, the military, the border, private enterprise, and the Constitution itself. The only remaining question is whether the rest of the nation will take them seriously before the damage becomes irreversible.

Sources:

Fox News —
