Early Sunday morning, the Iranian regime made its choice clear. While supposedly engaged in an interim deal with the United States \u2014 a 60-day process that began June 17 and is now near its halfway mark \u2014 Iran struck a civilian container ship in the Strait of Hormuz. The Cyprus-flagged vessel was set ablaze. It suffered significant engine room damage. One crew member, an Indian national, is still missing. Twenty-three others were rescued by Oman.<\/p>\n

This was not a misunderstanding. It followed a week of Iranian attacks on shipping in the strait, and it drew the third round of American airstrikes in that single week \u2014 each one a response to Iran hitting ships.<\/p>\n

U.S. Central Command struck approximately 140 targets: missile and drone launch sites, ammunition dumps, and communication equipment. President Trump did not sugarcoat it on NBC’s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d \u201cWe bombed the hell out of them last night,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Air raid sirens sounded in the UAE, though no missiles crossed into its territory. Semiofficial Iranian agencies reported that one of their own navy officers was killed.<\/p>\n

This is the regime that sat at the negotiating table. Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and a main negotiator, declared: \u201cThe era of one-sided deals is OVER… keep your word or pay the price. Reality is knocking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reality knocked all right. It arrived in the form of 140 American strikes on the infrastructure that enables Iran’s aggression. The mullahs wanted to play both sides \u2014 talk about deals while continuing to terrorize international shipping lanes that carry roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas. Oil prices had spiked to a wartime high of $120 a barrel. They have since eased as markets register that this particular choke point will not be held hostage.<\/p>\n

Oman, a country that has tried to maintain dialogue, summoned Iran’s ambassador and called these attacks \u201cirresponsible.\u201d That is diplomatic language for what everyone can see: Iran treats negotiations as cover for continued violence.<\/p>\n

The pattern is unmistakable. Iran agrees to talks, then attacks civilian vessels. It cries about one-sided deals while its forces create the very conditions that force a response. It endangers crews from around the world \u2014 then retaliates against neighboring countries when America defends the principle that commercial shipping should not be a target.<\/p>\n

Some will call this escalation. They have it backward. Escalation began when Iran decided a civilian container ship was a legitimate target. The alternative to a strong response is not peace. It is more burning ships, more missing crew members, higher energy costs passed on to American families, and a green light to every radical regime watching to see whether the United States still has the will to protect global commerce.<\/p>\n

President Trump understands the lesson that too many previous administrations forgot: You do not negotiate from weakness with people who respect only strength. The interim deal was supposed to create space for de-escalation. Iran used that space to keep attacking. Trump called the deal over last week. The regime proved his point by continuing the very behavior the talks were meant to stop.<\/p>\n

The Strait of Hormuz is not Iran’s private weapon. It is a global artery. When the mullahs treat it as a toll road they can close at will, they threaten not just American interests but the stability of energy markets that affect working people everywhere.<\/p>\n

The response early Sunday was not reckless. It was necessary. It was proportionate to the threat. And it sent the only message this regime has ever understood: American patience has limits, and American strength will be used when those limits are crossed.<\/p>\n

Iran’s negotiators can keep issuing statements about broken deals. The rest of us saw what they were really doing while the clock on the 60-day interim ran down. They chose aggression over restraint. They got the answer they earned.<\/p>\n

If the regime wants actual peace instead of temporary pauses between attacks, it can begin by stopping the strikes on civilian shipping and honoring the basic rules of civilized conduct at sea. Until then, strength is not optional. It is the only policy that keeps the strait open and tells tyrants everywhere that America will not be played for a fool while its interests and the world’s energy lifeline are under assault.<\/p>\n
