On Wednesday, The New York Times published an anonymously sourced story claiming the Secret Service had urged President Trump to leave the recent NATO summit in Turkey aboard an older version of Air Force One rather than the Boeing 747 donated by Qatar, citing security concerns. The next day, again leaning entirely on anonymous sources, the Times reported that the gifted plane lacked “defensive countermeasures that were security features of the old model, including its advanced antimissile capabilities.”

Read that again. Whether or not the Times’ anonymous sourcing is accurate — and it remains their reporting, not established fact — the effect of publishing it is the same. Someone with access to closely held security information about the presidential fleet allegedly walked it out the door, and a newspaper broadcast the alleged vulnerabilities of the President’s plane to the world. That is not a public service. That is a targeting memo.

The Justice Department is now doing what any serious government would do: chasing down the leak. Federal agents delivered subpoenas Friday evening — some to reporters’ homes — to the four journalists bylined on Wednesday’s article: Julian E. Barnes, Eric Lipton, Tyler Pager and Eric Schmitt. The subpoenas seek to compel their testimony before a federal grand jury in Manhattan on Wednesday “in regard to an alleged violation of federal criminal law,” according to the Times. The subpoenas were issued by U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton of the Southern District of New York, whom Trump has nominated to serve as the next director of national intelligence.

Notably, before the first story ran, a senior FBI official reportedly contacted a Times reporter and editor and asked that the story be held and the sources identified. Both refused. That was their right. But let no one pretend the government sat on its hands or acted in the dark — it asked first, was rebuffed, and only then went to a grand jury.

Predictably, the Times has wrapped itself in the First Amendment. David McCraw, the paper’s senior vice president and deputy general counsel, called the subpoenas a “brazen act” and said the appearance of federal agents on reporters’ doorsteps “should shock the conscience of any American who believes in the Constitution and the press freedom it protects.” Bruce D. Brown of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press argued that prosecutors are supposed to seek information from reporters only as a last resort. Those objections deserve to be stated plainly, and they are stated here.

But press freedom is not a license to launder national-security leaks. The Constitution protects the right to publish; it does not immunize the leaker, and grand-jury testimony about who committed a federal crime is not censorship. The reporters were not charged with anything. They were asked, under oath, to help identify a person who may have compromised the security of the President of the United States. A press corps that spent years demanding “accountability” and “transparency” suddenly discovers the value of secrecy the moment the secret is its own source.

Critics will note this fits a broader pattern — settlements with ABC News and CBS’s 60 Minutes, legal skirmishes with other outlets, and an earlier FBI search of a Washington Post reporter’s property in a separate leak probe. Fair enough; readers can weigh whether that pattern reflects an administration that fights back or one that overreaches. Reasonable people land in different places, and the courts will have their say.

But on this specific set of facts, the moral arithmetic is not complicated. A leak that exposes the defensive posture of the aircraft carrying the commander in chief is not whistleblowing. It is a danger to the man 77 million Americans elected, and to the institution of the presidency itself. If the Justice Department can lawfully find out who did it, it should. The scandal here was never the subpoena. It was the leak.

Sources:

<a
