OPINION / COMMENTARY
Claire Valdez is 56.1% of the way to Congress, and she wants you to know exactly whose side she’s on. Spoiler: it’s not yours.
Valdez is the Democratic nominee for New York’s 7th Congressional District — Bushwick, Ridgewood, and the rest of a seat so safely blue it carries a Cook Partisan Voting Index of D+25. She beat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and City Councilmember Julie Won in the June 23 primary, running to replace retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez. She currently sits in the New York State Assembly, she’s a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and she’s got the full progressive starting lineup behind her: Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Sen. Bernie Sanders, NYC-DSA, Justice Democrats, the United Auto Workers. This isn’t some fringe candidate nobody’s heard of. This is the future of the Democratic Party in New York City, and come January she will very likely have a vote on the floor of the United States House of Representatives.
So on Mexican Independence Day, Valdez posted this on X: “215 years ago, Mexicans fought an empire that demanded our land and our labor. And we won. I’ll carry that fight with me to Congress as New York’s first Mexican American representative. And I’m strengthened not just by Mexico’s history but its present.” Then she told everyone she’d just met with “comrades” in Morena — that’s Mexico’s ruling left-wing party, the one currently running the country — who she said are “standing up to the empires and corporations that have always taken from us.” She signed off with “Viva la Independencia, Viva México!”
Read that again. A woman who is about to be sworn in to represent American citizens in the American Congress just told you, in her own words, that the fight she’s carrying to Washington is Mexico’s fight. Not a border security plan. Not a jobs plan for Bushwick. Mexico’s 215-year-old fight against an empire — and she met with the sitting ruling party of a foreign government to talk about it before she said so publicly.
That’s not a slip of the tongue. That’s a mission statement.
It didn’t take long for people to notice. Immigration attorney and columnist Alicia Nieves went straight to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau — a former U.S. ambassador to Mexico — and asked, on the record, whether Valdez’s meeting with Morena warrants a Logan Act investigation. The Logan Act is a rarely used 1799 law that criminalizes private citizens running their own foreign policy against the interests of the U.S. government. Nobody has ever been convicted under it — two men were indicted in the 1800s, neither convicted — and Democrats have thrown the same accusation at Donald Trump, John Kerry, and Jesse Jackson over the years without it ever sticking. So let’s be honest about the odds here: Valdez probably isn’t going to prison over a tweet. But the fact that the question is even reasonable to ask about an incoming member of Congress tells you everything about where the modern Democratic Party’s socialist wing has its priorities.
Christina Pushaw, who does communications for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, put it about as well as anyone: “This would be a great campaign for Congress in Mexico.” She’s not wrong. Nobody forced Valdez to frame her congressional campaign around a foreign country’s independence movement and a sit-down with that country’s ruling party. She chose to. On purpose. In public.
And there’s a wrinkle here that ought to embarrass her further: critics have pointed out that Valdez’s own father, Larry, is linked to a company that helped build a Texas immigration detention center under the Obama administration — while his daughter is running on abolishing ICE as a “day-one” priority. You can’t make this up. The family business built the infrastructure. The daughter wants to tear down the agency that uses it.
Here’s the part that should actually worry you. This district is D+25. Valdez isn’t in a competitive race against her Republican opponent, community organizer Melvin Rivera — she’s a virtual lock. There is no accountability mechanism here, no swing voter she has to answer to. She can say exactly what she believes because the seat is bulletproof. And what she believes, in her own words, is that Mexico’s fight is her fight, and Mexico’s ruling party are her comrades.
New Yorkers in the 7th District are about to send someone to Washington who’s already told you, before she’s even sworn in, where her loyalties start. Believe her.
