Attorney General Pam Bondi directs review of January 6 cases including the Proud Boys seditious conspiracy trial on July 10.

Attorney General Pam Bondi signed the order on July 10, 2026, establishing a special task force to review the January 6 prosecutions for prosecutorial misconduct and due process violations. The move directly targets the cases that produced lengthy prison terms for Proud Boys members and other defendants.

The Proud Boys seditious conspiracy trial delivered Tarrio’s 22-year sentence and multi-year terms for his co-defendants. Prosecutors built the case on pre-January 6 planning discussions rather than actions inside the Capitol, where no Proud Boys leadership participated. The task force will now audit whether the government met its discovery obligations and whether the conspiracy charges represented an unprecedented expansion of federal power against a political group.

This is war by other means, and Bondi has fired the first shot in the counteroffensive. The establishment spent years framing the Proud Boys as an organized threat while the record shows far greater violence and property destruction during the Portland rallies of 2019 went largely unpunished at the federal level. Selective enforcement defined the prior DOJ approach.

The task force will examine charging decisions, the role of confidential informants, and the use of enhanced penalties that turned misdemeanor trespass into felony conspiracy counts. Early indications suggest the review will extend to all 1,500-plus January 6 cases, not just the headline trials. Remaining defendants and those already convicted stand to benefit from any findings of systemic abuse. The seditious conspiracy statute, rarely invoked before these cases, now faces fresh scrutiny over its application. Defense teams have argued from the start that the charges criminalized ordinary political speech and association.

Bondi’s directive also opens the door to civil liability claims against individual prosecutors and investigators if evidence of bad faith emerges. The J6 Compensation Committee has long advocated for financial redress for families destroyed by these cases. The new task force creates an official channel that could feed directly into those efforts and accelerate compensation for those who served time under questionable legal theories.

Numbers reveal the imbalance. Over 1,500 individuals faced federal charges tied to January 6. The Proud Boys prosecution consumed extensive resources to convict five men on charges that critics called novel and politically motivated. Meanwhile, organized riots in cities across the country in 2020 produced far fewer conspiracy cases despite billions in damages. The double standard fueled the very distrust the prior administration claimed to combat.

The pendulum is swinging back. Bondi’s task force represents more than bureaucratic housekeeping. It marks the beginning of a systematic effort to restore equal application of the law after the prior regime turned federal power into a political weapon. Years of one-sided application of federal power created a stain on the justice system that this review aims to address directly. The establishment is running out of tricks when the same institutions it once controlled now turn inward to examine its own record.

They came for the patriots. The patriots came back. The institutions that enabled the targeting now face the same standard they once imposed without mercy. The ledger is open. The review has begun.
