ARIZONA DEMOCRATS CRUSH ANTI-ISRAEL DSA RADICAL 2-TO-1

On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Arizona Democrats in the 4th Congressional District delivered a clear message: the radical left’s brand of Democratic socialism, Israel-bashing, and endless street theatrics is a liability where it actually matters. Incumbent Rep. Greg Stanton crushed DSA activist Kai Newkirk by a better than 2-to-1 margin—68.1 percent to 31.9 percent—in the Democratic primary covering parts of Phoenix and Maricopa County. This was not a deep-blue enclave where activists can cosplay revolution without consequence. This was a real battleground district, and voters looked at the candidate who made “genocide” accusations against Israel the centerpiece of his campaign and rejected him decisively.

Stanton, 56, is a four-term incumbent and former Phoenix mayor first elected to Congress in 2018. He belongs to the center-left, pro-business New Democrat Coalition, receives AIPAC support, and has long described himself as pro-Israel while calling for ceasefires and backing a two-state solution. He faces Republican Zuhdi Jasser in November and remains a strong favorite. Newkirk, 45, is an activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America who, according to the Arizona Republic, joined the DSA just days after requesting their endorsement. He boasts of more than 25 arrests in civil disobedience and built his entire challenge around ending all U.S. military aid to Israel, imposing an arms embargo, and accusing the Jewish state of “genocide.”

Newkirk left no doubt about his priorities. “I’ve been arrested over 25 times in civil disobedience—and I’ll go to jail for justice again before I ever take a dime from AIPAC,” he declared. He hammered Stanton relentlessly: “Greg Stanton has taken over $300K from AIPAC… he just voted to send billions more of our tax dollars to Israel to fund their war crimes and genocide. Disgraceful.” He dismissed the incumbent as “a corporate Democrat who’s never going to fight for the kinds of changes that we need to really shift from oligarchy in our country to a real democracy that puts working-class people first.” On immigration, Newkirk attacked Stanton’s support for the Laken Riley Act—legislation that passed after 46 House Democrats crossed party lines and requires ICE to detain illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes—claiming it “gave Trump a green light for his authoritarian mass deportation campaign.”

Stanton did not hide from these fights. He voted for the Laken Riley Act. He voted against Rep. Thomas Massie’s amendment to cut military aid to Israel, stating that such a cut “would undermine America’s ability to counter real threats from Iran.” In a competitive district that actually elects members of Congress who must win general elections, those positions proved popular with Democratic primary voters. Newkirk’s maximalist anti-Israel posture and DSA branding did not.

The challenger collected the expected progressive endorsements—Our Revolution, Progressive Democrats of America, Track AIPAC, and Young Turks host Cenk Uygur. Yet even within the activist left the ground was shifting. In July the Young Democrats of Arizona pulled their endorsement, citing “concerning patterns of behavior.” A 2019 blog post had accused Newkirk of “grooming” young female political activists; Newkirk calls the post defamatory, and one of its own authors later denounced it as falling short of journalistic standards. The allegation remains unproven and disputed. What is not disputed is that Newkirk lost institutional support in the final weeks while Stanton rolled to a landslide.

None of this means the national progressive project has collapsed. Democratic socialists have recently won primaries in New York, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Safe progressive districts still reward the loudest voices on the left. But Arizona’s 4th is not one of those districts. It is competitive turf where voters must eventually face a general election, and the socialist surge hit a hard wall. Primary voters who will help decide control of the House next year looked at an anti-Israel, “genocide”-chanting DSA activist and chose the center-left incumbent by more than two to one.

That result should set off flashing warning lights for Democrats heading into the midterms. Outside the deepest blue bubbles, the radical-left brand—particularly its fixation on demonizing Israel and AIPAC—is electoral poison. Arizona Democrats just demonstrated they understand the difference between performing for online activists and winning where the map is purple. The rest of the party would be wise to notice.
